Time Management Tips

When you’re running a business, there are seemingly endless demands on your time. You’v seen books like the 4-Hour Work Week and in theory you think you can make that work… but then you can’t. And there’s nothing more deflating than feeling a hope of having more time and less to do, then finding out you can’t make it happen. 

Of course, the tactics presented in Tim Ferriss’ book are useful and have worked for thousands of people, but I have to be honest, I’m not one of them. 

So I’ve found other ways to work maybe not only 4 hours but more like 5-8 a week and still get everything done that I had planned.  

It all comes down to being intentional with your time. So I’m going to share one of my tactics that has been really helpful for my content marketing. 

As any content marketer knows, making content takes time. Even just getting on IG Live and giving a well informed bit of advice takes preparation. So here’s how I break down my week to get the most out of my time:

Sunday

Spend 1-2 hours writing your big pieces of content for the week. For me, this means blog posts. I turn off my distractions, set a Pomodoro timer, and settle in for four cycles. I may not get everything done in that time but I can typically get 1-2 weeks worth of blogs done in that time. 

Spend 15 minutes engaging with your social community. 

Monday

Spend 1 hour planning your social media posts for the week. Make any graphics you’ll need, download stock photos, write scripts for planned IG videos — do whatever you need to in order to feel like social media can be manageable and not a huge time suck.

Spend 15 minutes engaging with your social community. 

Tuesday

Spend 1-2 hours planning new content. Try out a podcast, maybe you can create an email course, or simple start a newsletter. This will likely require some research which can easily steal hours, so if you timebox this exercise, you’ll only engage with content that is most beneficial to you instead of going down rabbit holes.

If you find a blog you like, bookmark it and visit later. 

Spend 15 minutes engaging with your social community. 

Wednesday

By now, you’ve likely accrued some ideas and tasks that need to get done. This can be answering emails that you’ve been putting off, watching a webinar, or whatever other nagging thing you have had swimming around in the back of your mind. Give yourself the time and space to get that done. Don’t let yourself take more than 2 hours. 

Spend 15 minutes engaging with your social community. 

Thursday

Spend 30 minutes – 1 hour reviewing your content. Check out your stats, see how you’re doing, and revise your editorial plan. 

Now that you’ve reviewed the data available to you, spend 1 hour planning your ads for the next week.

Friday

Spend 15 minutes engaging with your social community. 


This is how I break down my week, but we’re different people so make this fit your life. My hope is that you can take this idea of giving each day a specific intention and maximize your time by doing so. It’ll also help you cut down on the mental stress of switching gears from writing a blog to commenting on Instagram to learning a new skill, then before you know it you’ve been at it for 3 hours and haven’t done a really good job at any of those things.

Mindful Marketing Tips

I’ve been thinking about how I want to use this blog in a way that’s genuinely helpful to other marketers while also being authentic. I’m interested in almost everything so narrowing down a focus is a tough ask, but finding a niche that’s helpful to others is nearly impossible. 

Then it hit me: mindful marketing.

Like many other people in the workforce, particularly Millennials, I struggle to avoid burnout. It’s hard to find a balance between working hard, taking care of my mental and physical health, and enriching myself by learning new things and indulging in my hobbies. 

Mindfulness has been a huge key for me in helping me find this balance, starting with my work. 

How many times do you find yourself staring at the same email, excel sheet, whatever, for minutes that turn into half hours, and before you know it you’ve given in to every distraction and still haven’t finished that one task. 

That serves no one well, especially not you.

What is mindful marketing?

Even if you know nothing about mindfulness as a meditation practice, that’s ok. All it boils down to is giving your focus to whatever it is you’re doing. In meditation that means breathing, in business it means focusing on your task at hand and maximizing your output in that time.

It means planning and spending only the allocated time accomplishing what you’ve set out to do. 

It’s basically bringing out the best of productivity techniques you’ve heard about but personalizing them yo fit you, your business, and your own brain. 

So from now on, my promise to you is to bring you techniques that will help you maximize your time while getting the most out of your business.

Sometimes it’s easy to get so wrapped up in the world of marketing that it’s easy to forget some business simply need to know the basics about online marketing.

For a lot of people, this means taking the first step of having a website. If your business runs largely offline, like my local bagel shop, it’s still a good idea to have a website. That way people can find you and learn a bit about your business before deciding whether or not to visit.

There’s a joke amongst Millennials that if you’re dating someone and they don’t have a social media presence, then there must be something they’re hiding.

While it’s not exactly the same for businesses, it’s still important to put a professional foot forward and make sure people know you care about them being able to find and contact you.

So, in an effort to help you get your online marketing efforts off the ground, I wanted to put together a quick checklist of five ways you can start building your online presence today.

  1. Get a website
    Decide what you want your website to be like, and set a budget to help you narrow down your choices. The good news is that even if your budget is $0, you can still start a website. Places like wordpress.com and weebly.com make it easy to create engaging sites that make your business look professional.
    If you plan to have a basic webpage, that’s totally fine. But remember that you’ll have one chance to make an impression on your potential customers. So, choose a design that conveys what you’d like people to base their first impression on.
  2. Get an Instagram Business account
    I promise this sounds harder than it is. It’s as simple as:

    1. Starting an Instagram account
    2. Go to Settings and choose to make it a Business account
    3. Enter your business’ phone number or email
    4. Start posting!
